Deploying Robotic Process Automation for The United States Marine Corps

 

Vergence provided assistance to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in developing and utilizing robotic process automation (RPA).  

USMC’s Need for RPA Solutions 

The United States’ Office of Management and Budget had recently informed federal agencies that adopting RPA was a top priority. The USMC desired guidance on successfully implementing a program to increase productivity and reduce costs within its Technology Services Organization (TSO).  

Project Goals 

  • Develop a blueprint for a USMC RPA center of excellence (COE). 

  • Identify RPA use cases. 

  • Deploy business process improvement techniques to improve return on investment (ROI) for use cases. 

  • Scale the COE for increased organizational adoption by defining maturity levels needed by the TSO based on United States Department of Defense (DoD) RPA playbook

Vergence’s Approach 

Vergence utilized an agile design approach to deliver a high-quality blueprint for the COE. The Vergence team customized the design to fit how the USMC operates and abide by the DoD’s RPA playbook. 

Project leaders from the Vergence team educated United States government personnel about all aspects of RPA including development, automation analysis, best practices, estimating models, and documentation. 

To deploy selected RPA use cases, Vergence conducted education, process discovery, process improvement sessions, and ROI prioritization. The use cases then followed a standard agile software development life cycle featuring training, creation of operator manuals, user acceptance testing, and production-scheduled deployments. The process lifecycle of use case candidates was evaluated through a custom-built digital intake application. 

Results 

Successful COE implementation 

$450,000 in estimated cost savings 

Approximately 8,000 personnel hours saved 

25 processes identified as candidates for RPA 

10 full-time employees reassigned to higher value activities 

Increased USMC employee and customer satisfaction based on post-project surveys.
