EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: ALEX WHITE
In the dynamic world of technology, Alex White stands out as a beacon of growth and adaptability. As the Director of Technology at Vergence, LLC, Alex's nearly 13-year journey with the company (originally Abstract) is a compelling narrative of progression and resilience.
Alex started in June 2011 as a Tier One Tech and Software Developer. His rapid rise within the company was marked by his passion and proficiency. Reflecting on his early days, Alex said, “I started as a tier one tech and software developer and then pretty rapidly, within my first year, I was a Tier 3.” His ambition soon led him to take on significant roles in software and web development.
Taking on the challenge of website development, a task previously outsourced, Alex reshaped the company's approach in this domain. "And then my third year here, I started doing [website development] and that became a large chunk of my responsibility," he shared, highlighting the expansion of his role.
Alex's journey is underpinned by a diverse educational background. He attended Purdue and IU, exploring fields from computer science to linguistics. Despite not completing his bachelor's degree, the practical skills he gained at Ivy Tech provided a solid foundation for his tech career. On his educational journey, Alex commented, "I've got 8 years of college... I just have my associate's degree, but I've got extensive schooling."
A typical day for Alex at Vergence is varied and challenging. He explained, “Every morning is just about an hour of going through client emails, catching up on tickets... and then after that it's... taking care of any fires that took place overnight or are taking place this morning.” This variety keeps him constantly engaged and learning.
Leadership and teamwork are central to Alex’s ethos. He emphasizes trust and the importance of empowering his team: “They're people I can trust implicitly... I know it'll get taken care of and get taken care of well.”
Alex also offers advice for those joining the team, emphasizing the importance of composure and adaptability: “Make sure you’re not intimidated by what you’re working on... staying calm and working through the problem rationally is 90% of being successful in this.”
Outside of work, Alex enjoys the outdoors and gaming. He said, “I like to hike, kayak, walk... and I play D&D with friends every weekend.”
